This beautiful Grotrian-Steinweg piano with a Hupfeld 88 note Phonola system was already almost fully restored when my customer called me and asked me to complete the restorations. More detailed examination revealed that the previous restoration of the Hupfeld Phonola had been carried out not only faultily but partly disastrous. Thus, for example, the wind chests were so incompetently separated and leveled that the air ducts had been exposed. Therefore the restorer had to create new wind chests. Much of the previous glue work was untight. The Hupfeld Phonola was therefore completely restored again. And the wonderful case with the rare putto inserts was restored with hand-polished shellac. A suction turbine with automatic shutdown at the end of the role was connected as a supplement to pedal operation.
After all this restoration work, the instrument shines again in its original splendor. It is applicable at the highest level as a manual, artistic or semiautomatic self-playing piano. The instrument is now, fully operational, back at its original owner's.
